The use of Antihypertensives in the Hypertensive Patients

Abstract
Hypertension is found 10-20% in adults and major complications are heart failure, renal failure and stroke. If not actively treated, mortality and morbidity is increased by hypertension-induced complication and quality of life is decreased. In treating mild to moderate hypertension, initial approach should be nonpharmacologic therapy-weight reduction, dietary sodium restriction etc. Patients who remain hypertensive should proceed to drug therapy.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of antihypertensive and blood pressure changes in 195 patients with essential hypertension.
The results were as follows:
1. Mean blood pressure was 170.4/104.9§®Hg befor antihypertensive administration and 148. 9/94.9§®Hg after 1 week, 145.1/92.7§®Hg after 3 weeks, 138.2/88.0§®Hg after 7 weeks, 139.0/87.9§®Hg after 11 weeks antihypertensive administration.
2. Mean duration to reduce blood pressure less than 140/90§®Hg was 6 weeks.
3. Frequency of antihypertensives were calcium channel blockers 91.8%, ACE inhibitors 72.8%, ¥â-blockers 56.9%, diuretics 53.3% and prazocin 17.9%
